One of the most important novels of modern times, entering the post-war canon of European literature, was first published in 1959. Its hero is the "little man" Oskar Matzerath, whose childhood coincides with the birth of National Socialism. Recognizing the absurdity of reality, he decides to stop growing and refuses to become an adult. His constant companion is a tin drum: by beating a rhythm on it, Oskar expresses his attitude toward his surroundings. With a merciless, sarcastic, and at the same time penetrating perspective from below, the novel depicts life in the Third Reich, the atmosphere of the ordinary world that breeds indifference to the ever-increasing terrible evil. The novel, a grotesque reflection of 20th-century German history, brought its author worldwide renown.
