Shadows in Western Art

In this fascinating book, first published in 1995, Ernst Gombrich, one of the greatest art historians, explains the role shadows have played in Western painting over the centuries. Since the Renaissance, artists have emphasized their sharpness in some cases and deliberately avoided depicting them in others. Using examples of famous paintings, the author shows how painters and graphic artists of different movements - from Romanticism and Impressionism to Surrealism - used shadows to make the image more realistic or dramatic. Gombrich also touches on the ambiguous nature of shadows in mythology and philosophy and analyzes the factors that determine the shape and sharpness of shadows: the location and type of light source, the shape of the illuminated object, and the type of surface on which the shadow falls.
