Gilles Deleuze, according to one of his contemporaries, was a true cinephile. "He realized earlier and better than we do that in a sense society itself is Cinema." Deleuze did not just develop a culture of watching film, but also sought to understand what role philosophy could play in understanding film and what, on the contrary, film had irreparably changed in philosophy. He was one of the few who, in thinking about cinema, also tried to think with it. Perhaps no other philosopher has written about cinema so thoroughly from the point of view of serious philosophy without at the same time turning cinema into a mere object of study, which it is enough to look at from the outside.
