Natalia Semyonova, a biographer of Moscow collectors of the early twentieth century, tells about the fates of brothers Mikhail and Ivan Morozov, representatives of a prominent merchant dynasty. Succeeding thanks to business acumen and natural talent, the richest Russian manufacturers had an amazing artistic flair. Unlike Sergei Shchukin, Ivan Morozov bought not only works by French modernist artists, but also contemporary Russian artists.
In the mansion on Prechistenka hung not only paintings by Degas, Pissarro, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Denis and Bonnard, but also by Vrubel, Korovin, Goncharova, Larionov, Chagall and many others. After the revolution, the unique collection was nationalized and then distributed between the Hermitage and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Natalia Semyonova talks about her heroes with a passion comparable to that with which Russian collectors bought masterpieces of world art.
