The established view of the Victorian era positions women of that period as powerless hostages of societal morality. Nina Auerbach proposes to reconsider this stereotype and explore how women, rejected by the establishment, find themselves at the center of Victorian cultural myth.

The book focuses on three key images of the Victorian period: the vamp, the spinster, and the fallen woman. From John Stuart Mill, Thomas Carlyle, and John Ruskin to Pre-Raphaelite paintings and caricatures, the Victorian cultural imagination, despite its embrace of science and rationalism, associated female figures with supernatural energy and new forms of subjectivity. The author sets out to explore the myth through which Victorians dealt with their crisis of faith—a myth capable of reclaiming a past that imbues modern women with unexpected strength.

Nina Auerbach is Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania.
