The collection includes five books by the remarkable popularizer of science Yakov Isidorovich Perelman (1882–1942): “Entertaining Arithmetic,” “Entertaining Algebra,” “Entertaining Geometry,” “Entertaining Mathematics,” and “Living Mathematics.” These works introduce the reader to the world of scientific knowledge, help to instill in the reader a taste for studying the exact sciences, and arouse interest in independent creative pursuits. 472 of the illustrations in these books were made (in close contact with Perelman himself) by the staff artist of the Leningrad publishing house “Vremya,” Yuri (Georgy) Dmitrievich Skaldin (1891–1951), the younger brother of the writer Alexei Dmitrievich Skaldin, who was able to superbly illustrate the most complex scientific phenomena and experiments.
