Behind the Facade of "Stalinist Abundance": Distribution and Market in the Supply of the Population during the Industrialization Years, 1927–1941

The paradox of half-empty stores and full refrigerators was noted by literally everyone who came to the USSR during the years of socialist stagnation. The mystery has a simple explanation. State trade under socialism was never the only source of supply for the population. There was always a vast legal and underground market for goods and services. This book takes the reader back to the origins of socialist trade, to the legendary first five-year plans. The focus is on the everyday life of society under the conditions of stateization of the economy, destruction and revival of the market. The book is based on previously closed archival materials, including documents from the OGPU/NKVD archives. The third edition of the book is supplemented with historiographical reviews of modern research. Elena Aleksandrovna Osokina is a doctor of historical sciences, professor at the University of South Carolina. She graduated from the Faculty of History of Moscow State University. For many years she worked in Moscow at the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Author of the books "Alchemy of Soviet industrialization", "Heavenly blue of angelic robes", "Gold for industrialization", published in "UFO". Winner of the Enlightener Prize (2019) and the Macarius Prize (2019).
