Herman Broder miraculously survived World War II. A Polish peasant woman, Jadwiga, a former servant in Herman's home, hid him in her attic for several years. After the war, Herman, having learned that his wife and children had been executed by the Germans, emigrated to America with Jadwiga and married her. Now living in New York City's Jewish Quarter, he writes and meets with his mistress, who also miraculously survived the Holocaust. With each passing day, Herman becomes increasingly entangled in his memories and romantic relationships, increasingly unoriented in his surroundings. It's as if higher powers are determined to push this man to the brink... And the past, seemingly lost forever, returns to life.

The novel "Enemies: A Love Story" is one of the most famous works by Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902–1991), author of the novel "Shosha" and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature for his "emotional art of narrative." In this edition, the novel is published for the first time in a brilliant translation from English by Alexandra Glebovskaya.
