Mikhail Dorimedontovich Likhutin was a major general in the Russian army and a participant in the Caucasian and Crimean Wars, as well as the Hungarian campaign of 1849. In his memoirs, he vividly and colorfully describes the little-known events of the Crimean War—the military operations in Transcaucasia, in which he participated as chief of staff of General K.K. Wrangel's Yerevan detachment. Their brilliant outcome was the capture of the powerful Turkish fortress of Kars, which allowed the recapture of Sevastopol, occupied by the allies, in exchange for it.
