This book by renowned historian and publicist Andrzej Ikonnikov-Galitsky continues his series on the criminal underworld of the former capital of the Russian Empire, this time focusing on the NEP period. It recounts the brutal confrontation between the Criminal Investigation Department and the police against the criminal underworld of NEP-era Petrograd-Leningrad. Among the book's characters are such notable figures as the bandit king Lenka Panteleev and Alexei Andreevich Salkov, the founder of the new era St. Petersburg school of forensic science. Several chapters are specifically devoted to various types of crime: banditry, murder, fraud, theft, robbery, prostitution, hooliganism, and others, as well as the work of law enforcement officials: courts, police departments, and correctional labor institutions. The book is based on newspaper and magazine court and police reports, as well as academic research. The publication includes an illustrated insert.
