Thorstein Veblen (1857 - 1929) was an American economist, sociologist and publicist, PhD, who taught at Cornell, Chicago and Stanford Universities. "The Theory of the Idle Class" is a landmark work by T. Veblen. The main material for the study he drew from the reality of that time - the era of slums and palaces in Chicago. In this book, the author for the first time introduced the very concept of "idle class", which is characterized by the demonstration of its capabilities, high position in the hierarchy. Veblen called it demonstrative idleness and demonstrative consumption, when a person seeks not so much economic as social benefit, buying not practical but status things.
