A classic French writer with Russian roots, a military pilot and a brilliant diplomat, Romain Gary (real name Roman Katsev) is the only writer to have won the Prix Goncourt twice: the first time in 1956 as Gary, and the second in 1975 as Émile Ajar. Gary refused to accept the second award
and kept the secret of the non-existent "Ajar" throughout his life. He only revealed this hoax on the day of his suicide in 1980, sending his publisher a text entitled "The Life and Death of Émile Ajar."

While publishing one "Ajar" book after another, he continued to publish as Romain Gary. "Light of a Woman" (1977) is one of his best-known and most poignant novels about the clash of love and death. The novel was adapted into a film by the renowned Costa-Gavras, starring Yves Montand and Romy Schneider.
