Smolensk War 1632-1634. Organization and state of the Moscow army

The events of the Time of Troubles showed that the Russian army was lagging behind the armies of European countries in technical, organizational and tactical terms. Therefore, the government of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, preparing for war with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in order to retake Smolensk, took a number of steps to modernize the Russian army. In addition to hiring foreign specialists, for the first time regiments of "foreign formation" were created, armed and trained in the Western manner.
The book by E.D. Stashevsky, a professor at St. Vladimir's University in Kiev, describes all these measures, which were of great importance for the development of military affairs in Russia. First published in 1919, it has not lost its scientific importance to date.
