"An Incident in Moscow" is a prequel to the previously published books in Yulia Yakovleva's new detective series, set in 1812. The author evokes the era with the atmosphere of a modern hard-boiled detective novel: a St. Petersburg hussar, Murin, who reluctantly becomes a detective, solves a crime that seems contemporary—yet plausible in any era.

October 1812. Moscow has just been abandoned by Napoleon's army. The first Russian hussars, entering the city, are astonished by its burned and devastated appearance. While patrolling the streets, Captain Murin and his comrade come across a dilapidated mansion. Hearing a woman's desperate scream in French, Murin decides to intervene and rushes inside. Something strange seems to happen, then a sudden explosion envelops everything in smoke. War will excuse any villainy—so thinks the criminal. But Murin is determined to find the truth and restore justice.
