On December 22, 1849, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, arrested in the Petrashevsky case, was on the brink of death, but at the last minute, his death sentence was commuted to penal servitude. He spent nearly ten years in Siberia: four years in the Omsk prison camp, then in Semipalatinsk, where he served his military service.
In Siberia, Dostoevsky's only hope was to return to writing, and even in penal servitude, he attempted to surreptitiously jot down notes. "The Siberian Notebook" is the writer's first surviving notebook. Materials from it would later be incorporated into many of Dostoevsky's texts, but most notably "Notes from the House of the Dead," which combined a factual description of penal life with autobiographical elements. Many years later, in 1876, the short story "The Peasant Marey" was published in "A Writer's Diary," in which Dostoevsky once again revisits the penal chapter of his biography.
The current edition includes these works, as well as letters from his Siberian period. As Doctor of Philology E. Yu. Safronova notes in the introduction, this is "not just a collection of works, but a chronicle of spiritual growth, a document of a man's resurrection and the birth of a great writer."
