Swedish lake and river flotillas in the Russian borderland (1701-1704)

The unsuccessful attempt of Peter I to recapture the fortress city of Narva in 1700 clearly indicated to Charles XII the direction of possible future attacks of the Russian armies. Thus, the defense of the borders of the Baltic provinces was a priority for Sweden, and the key elements of this defense were the lake flotillas in Derpt (Tartu) and on Lake Ladoga, created by the Swedish monarch's decree. Their creation was fraught with considerable difficulties and required huge material and human resources. This is true first of all for the Derpt flotilla, which operated in a closed theater of military operations. Its active actions on Lake Peipsi in 1701-1703 were a strong "irritating factor" for the Russian command in the region. The loss of the entire flotilla by the Swedes in May 1704 weakened the defense of Dorpat and contributed to the successful siege of the city by Russian troops. The Ladoga flotilla for almost two full campaigns in 1701-1702 completely controlled the situation in the lake theater of military operations. With the loss of Swedish fortress-cities in Prinevie in 1702-1703 the flotilla actually ceased to exist. However, the presence of the Swedes on Lake Ladoga acted as a catalyst for Peter the Great to accelerate the organization of his own lake forces and prepare for a more significant goal - access to the Baltic Sea.
