1942. Europe is engulfed in war. Charlotte Gray, the daughter of Captain Gray, familiar to readers from the novel "And the Birds Sang...," comes from Edinburgh to London in search of work. She gets a job as a doctor's assistant and soon meets military pilot Peter Gregory. Their romance develops rapidly. During one of his combat missions, Peter's plane is shot down over French territory. His name is not listed among those captured or killed, and Lieutenant Gregory is listed as missing in action.
Charlotte makes a desperate decision to search for Peter. Since she has spoken French fluently since childhood, the British Secret Service recruits her for a covert operation.
After brief training, Charlotte is deployed to occupied territory. She combines her mission with the search for her lover.
