Travels in the Amur region, China, and Japan

One of the pioneering explorers of the South Ussuri region was the distinguished geographer, traveler, and scientist Mikhail Ivanovich Venyukov (1832-1901). He was the first to conduct an expedition in June-July 1858, commissioned by N.N. Muravyov-Amursky, Governor-General of Eastern Siberia. Together with his companions—Captain Peshkov, Nanai translator Maslennikov, non-commissioned officer Karmanov, an orderly, and eleven Cossacks—he traveled from the Amur up the Ussuri River, and then became the first to cross the Sikhote-Alin mountain range and reach the sea. This distinguished explorer subsequently made numerous other journeys in the Far East and Central Asia, leaving behind a significant legacy.

In the year of Mikhail Ivanovich's 190th anniversary, the Rubezh publishing house is reissuing a collection of his works, Travels in the Amur Region, China, and Japan, published in 1970 by the Khabarovsk book publishing house, in a new series, the Arsenyev Library, and is beginning preparations for the Complete Works of M. I. Venyukov.
