During the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich, Patriarch Macarius of Antioch visited Russia twice: the first time (1656) to collect donations, and the second time, ten years later, to trial Patriarch Nikon. Accompanying him on his first visit was his son, Archdeacon Paul of Aleppo, who compiled a detailed and extremely interesting account of his father's three-year journey. In its completeness and diversity of content, Paul of Aleppo's description is one of the finest and most valuable written records of mid-17th-century Russia and, in many respects, surpasses the accounts of contemporary Western European travelers. Professor G. A. Murkos (1846–1911) translated the Arabic manuscript from the Moscow Main Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs into Russian. This publication is based on five issues of this work, published between 1896 and 1900. The book was first published in modern spelling in 2005.
