William Henry Hudson was an Anglo-Argentine writer, naturalist, and ornithologist. As a writer, he gained renown for several original, action-packed novels and short stories set in South America. Among Hudson's works of fiction, The Purple Earth (1885) is a recognized masterpiece, which John Galsworthy called the best picaresque novel in English literature in the last hundred years, and Jorge Luis Borges compared to The Odyssey. Borges noted that "despite the abundant bloodshed and the separations of its heroes, The Purple Earth is one of the few happy books in the world."
