Baroness Maria Ebner von Eschenbach (1830–1916) was an Austrian writer of Bohemian descent, the author of numerous psychological novels. "The Community's Inmate" (1887) is a model novel in its humanism and social criticism. Ebner von Eschenbach describes the cruel and indifferent attitude of adults toward street children. Pavel Golub, the book's protagonist, is a burden to the village community due to his parents' crimes; he is separated from his sister. "The Community's Inmate" is a novel about overcoming the ordeals of a difficult life in a society where everyone is hostile to other people's children. The novel was first published in Russian in the journal "Vestnik Inostrannoy Literatury" (Bulletin of Foreign Literature) in 1892.

"He wanted to die without leaving his seat. Often, both his father and strangers cursed Pavel for living, but the boy never suffered from these reproaches. Now life seemed unbearable to him, and he thought it wouldn't be hard to commit suicide. There were plenty of ways: hold your breath long enough and you'd die. With desperate determination, Pavel buried his head in the ground.
