From Patrons to Women's Departments: The History of the Russian Women's Movement
29.99 €
The reforms of the 1860s, which created new social elevators, led to the birth of the women's movement in Russia. At first, its participants advocated for the improvement of women's lives within the framework of Russian society, without aiming to change it. However, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the feminist movement was formed on the basis of the women's movement, which consistently criticized the prevailing gender attitudes in society. In her book Irina Yukina identifies two stages in the history of the women's movement and explores the relationship of continuity between them, showing how a unified ideological space of women's struggle for their rights was formed in Russia. Based on theoretical approaches of sociology of social movements, intellectual history and gender studies, the author analyzes the origins of the Russian women's movement, its tasks, ideology and the fates of its key participants. The book is the second, supplemented and clarified edition. Irina Yukina is a historian and sociologist, PhD in sociology.
