Writer Yuri Usychenko (1919–1980) is one of the founders of Soviet spy literature of its golden age. His debut story, “The Invisible Front” (1951), tells of the fight against the nationalist underground gangs immediately after the liberation of Western Ukraine. Colonel Vsevolodov and Captain Driga engage in a fight with the professional saboteur and murderer Kurepa. The story “When the City Sleeps” (1956) centers on the battle between Soviet naval counterintelligence agents and foreign agents trying to steal the secret of a new anti-mine trawl. Maritime romance is organically combined with a dynamic and exciting plot.
