Boris Nikolaevich Shiryaev (1889–1959) was a writer, journalist, and one of the most prominent figures in the literature of the Russian postwar émigré community. His "The Unquenchable Lamp" (1954) consists of a series of stories about the author's most striking events and encounters during his time in the Solovetsky penal servitude. This book, combining the virtues of memoir and original fiction, remains one of the most vivid testimonies to the terrible time of Bolshevik terror and the suffering and heroism of thousands of new Russian martyrs and confessors.
