This book is dedicated to the first ambassador of Soviet Russia, Adolf Joffe. He lived a short but eventful life, filled with sharp conflicts, ups, and downs. In Petrograd in 1917, he was one of the organizers of the October Revolution, led the Military Revolutionary Committee, and was a member of the Bolshevik leadership. He then conducted peace negotiations in Brest-Litovsk, served as plenipotentiary representative in Berlin, concluded peace treaties with Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, and established relations with China and Japan. However, after this meteoric rise, his career was cut short—largely because Joffe joined the party opposition, became a close friend of Leon Trotsky, and spoke out against the Stalinist regime. The book is based on archival documents, many of which are being introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time.
