Dreams of Pan-Asianism: Japanese Education in Occupied Manchuria
19.99 €
During World War II, Kenkoku University, located in occupied Manchuria, proclaimed its goal to achieve "ethnic harmony." It enrolled students of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Mongolian, and Russian descent, and the goal of training was to develop leaders for the puppet state of Manchukuo.
Unlike other colonial schools in the Japanese Empire, this university promised ethnic equality to its diverse student body, but at the same time imposed Japanese customs and beliefs on all students. This book attempts to rethink the Japanese ideology of the Pan-Asian movement, drawing on the testimonies of Kenkoku University students.
