The book by the English art historian Herbert Reed “A Brief History of Modern Sculpture” (1964), conceived as a paired volume to his “A Brief History of Modern Painting” (1959), is published for the first time in Russian. After half a century, it has not lost its relevance and is still considered a classic of art history. The material of the book covers a turbulent and controversial period of the development of modern art from the late XIX to the early 60s of the twentieth century. The key word in her name – “modern” – determined the choice of the author: he builds a number of sculptors – from Rodin to Cesar, in whose work there was a decisive break with the classical tradition, and analyzes their works that meet the spirit of modern times.
The richly illustrated edition is addressed to art historians, culturologists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the culture of the twentieth century.
