This book reveals the little-known story of a secret CIA program that smuggled banned literature behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the operation, led by George Minden, a Romanian émigré and intelligence officer, smuggled approximately 10 million books—from works by George Orwell and Alexander Solzhenitsyn to technical manuals and Western magazines—to socialist countries.

The books were smuggled: hidden in trucks, trains, travelers' suitcases, and even dropped from hot air balloons. The program was particularly successful in Poland, where banned publications were distributed through underground networks, and dissidents like Mirosław Chojecki organized their illegal printing.
