History of Roman Literature. In 2 volumes

The literature of the Roman period had a profound influence on the development of European literature, which, in essence, would have been impossible without the great ideas of Antiquity. Literary theory, rhetoric, historical science, philosophical doctrines, philology, and grammar emerged and took shape within the framework of ancient literature. To examine linguistic, genre, stylistic, and substantive features, the compilers selected the most significant literary works—poetic, rhetorical, dramatic, historical, scientific, philosophical, satirical, and others—that are of exceptional significance both for the history of literature and the Latin language, and for the development of ancient thought as a whole.

Volume I examines the works of Latin writers from the 3rd century BCE to the first half of the 1st century CE, i.e., the entire period of the Roman Republic and Principate. Volume II examines the works of Latin writers from the 1st century CE to the 5th century CE. CE, which marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. Among the book's most prominent figures are Terence, Cicero, Julius Caesar, Lucretius, Catullus, Virgil, Horace, Tibullus, Ovid, Livy, Seneca, and Tacitus.
