Henri Pirenne is perhaps one of the most prominent and well-known Belgian historians and public figures of the early 20th century. His works through the prism of the history of Belgium, or rather, the Lower Lands and their neighbors, allow us to penetrate deeply into the most interesting topic of the formation and development of the medieval European city. His ideas influenced Marc Bloch and the views of the French school of the Annals, which specialized in social history. Pirenne's writings helped to develop the historiography of the medieval city and still form the basis of urban studies.
