The work of German writer Lion Feuchtwanger (1884–1958) is one of the pinnacles of the historical novel genre. His works exemplify the novelist's virtuoso mastery: it seems Feuchtwanger mastered everything: epic scope and a profound understanding of human nature, reflected in his incredibly vivid characters, the ability to create a vivid, richly detailed image of an era, and captivatingly intricate plotlines.

His characters—from ancient Romans and medieval rulers to the writer's own contemporaries, who lived through a tragic and threatening era—are not static figures from history textbooks, but living people, overcome by passions and doubts that are understandable and unchanging in any age, facing the hardships and joys of their lives with confidence or trepidation. Magnificent examples of the writer's work are the famous novels "Jew Süss" (1925) and "Simone" (1943), in which Feuchtwanger masterfully creates an organic portrait of the country and the era: be it Germany at the beginning of the 18th century with its court intrigues, where Joseph Süss Oppenheimer strives for the heights of prosperity at any cost, or occupied France during the Second World War, where Simone Planchard dreams of the patriotic feat of Joan of Arc.
