Diplomatic Correspondence of Ivan the Terrible (1533–1584). In 3 volumes. Volume 1. Book 2. The Holy Roman Empire and the Countries of Europe
99.99 €
The Diplomatic Correspondence of Ivan the Terrible is the most comprehensive publication of letters to the highest authorities of European and Asian countries and vice versa, in the original languages. This corpus of correspondence is the first publication of its kind on the history of Russian diplomacy during the reign of Ivan IV and the Russian state as a whole until the reign of Peter the Great. Ambassadorial letters, discovered in manuscript collections and publications, reflect one of the most intense periods of diplomatic exchange in Russian history. Volume I contains messages from the diplomatic correspondence of the Russian state with the Holy Roman Empire, Livonia, the Holy See, Venice, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, England, and France. These letters include official messages exchanged between the Russian sovereign and European monarchs, as well as semi-official and secret letters, individual credentials, and military-diplomatic "sheets." The publication contains a comprehensive apparatus, opening up access for a wide audience to the world of Russian diplomacy of the 16th century, the history of the Russian state during the era of its rapid growth, transformation into an empire, and the revision of a number of foreign policy areas.
