Childhood. In People. My Universities
9.99 €
Russian writer, thinker, and five-time Nobel Prize nominee Maxim Gorky spent much time traveling throughout the Russian Empire before devoting his life to literature. He was orphaned early and grew up in a hostile home. His grandmother tried to surround him with love and care, but never dared to contradict her tyrant husband. His grandfather raised him in the old-fashioned way, beating the entire family. The suffering he experienced as a child left an indelible mark on the writer and formed the basis of his autobiographical trilogy, "Childhood. Among People. My Universities," in which he recounts his growing up and early disappointments.
The protagonist, Alyosha Peshkov, endures his grandfather's cruelty, poverty, work "among people," and wanderings, developing a strong character, a love of books, and humanism, contrasting them with the "leaden abominations of life."
