In 1597, the treatise "Daemonologie," written in the form of a dialogue between two intellectuals, was published in Edinburgh. Its author was King James, son of Mary Stuart, King of Scots, and the first king of England from the Stuart dynasty. He succeeded Elizabeth I to the English throne and united England and Scotland into Great Britain. Furthermore, James was a great expert on witchcraft. His treatise effectively became a manual for English witch trials. It describes various evil spirits, explains how they influence people, and how to identify those susceptible to them. It also includes a guide to witch trials.

For many years, King James's "Daemonologie" became a reference book for royal judges. References to this important document of the era are found in many playwrights of the time, including Shakespeare.
