Yury Nagibin's (1920–1994) career as a writer was exceptionally successful. Having begun publishing in the late 1940s, by the late 1980s he was already a distinguished Soviet writer with all the attendant trappings of status: print runs, royalties, trade union privileges, the attention of critics and journalists, and reader renown. But times changed, public preferences shifted, and the pantheon of distinguished members of the Writers' Union sank into obscurity. Nagibin likely faced the same fate, but at the end of perestroika, he prepared and partially published several works that instantly restored his former popularity. Among them, the stories offered in this collection are "Daphnis and Chloe in the Era of the Personality Cult, Voluntarism, and Stagnation" and "My Golden Mother-in-Law."
